Christian Dior Spring | Summer 1968 Embellished Empire-Line Evening Dress by Marc Bohan

      Art: 500

A remarkable Christian Dior evening dress from the Spring–Summer 1968 collection, created during the artistic direction of Marc Bohan, whose name defined the Maison’s elegant and quietly modern identity throughout the 1960s.

The original interior label reads “Printemps–Été 1968, Christian Dior Paris, Made in France,” providing a direct seasonal date for the garment.

As Marc Bohan was responsible for Dior’s collections during this period, the design can be securely placed within his tenure at the house.

Dior’s own archive attributes its haute couture collections from Spring–Summer 1960 through Spring–Summer 1989 to Bohan.

The dress is constructed in a restrained two-tone palette, with an ivory sleeveless bodice set above a sweeping black floor-length skirt.

Its high empire line and gently expanding A-line silhouette reflect Bohan’s preference for clarity, proportion and controlled femininity rather than theatrical excess.

The defining feature is the elaborate ornament encircling the raised waist. Multiple strands of fine gold-tone chain are arranged in softly draped swags, secured at intervals with knotted details.

At the centre sits an intricate filigree medallion embellished with vivid green cabochons, from which suspended beads and small articulated charms create a jewel-like pendant.

The decoration transforms the waistline into the visual focal point of the composition, recalling both antique jewellery and the opulent decorative vocabulary associated with late-1960s eveningwear.

The contrast between the architectural simplicity of the dress and the richness of its central ornament is particularly characteristic of Bohan’s approach at Dior: modern in silhouette, but anchored in the refinement and craftsmanship of the couture tradition.

The result is a garment of exceptional composure—ceremonial without appearing ostentatious, and decorative without compromising the purity of its line.

The piece retains visible evidence of its hand-finished construction, including interior working details and handwritten atelier markings.

These elements form part of its historical character and provide insight into the artisanal processes behind Parisian fashion at the end of the 1960s.

      About Marc Bohan

Marc Bohan (1926–2023) was the French couturier who succeeded Yves Saint Laurent at Christian Dior and became the longest-serving creative director in the history of the Maison.

Appointed around 1960–61, he remained at Dior until 1989. His debut collection, known as the “Slim Look,” introduced a more linear, supple and youthful interpretation of Dior elegance, adapting the house to the changing social and aesthetic climate of the 1960s.

Unlike the more radical designers of his generation, Bohan pursued modernity through balance, wearability and precision.

His clothes were celebrated for their graceful proportions, refined construction and understated sophistication, attracting clients including Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and other leading figures of international society.

He also played a central role in expanding Dior beyond traditional couture, notably through the development of the Miss Dior ready-to-wear line

Today, his work is increasingly recognised as an essential bridge between the formal grandeur of post-war haute couture and the more liberated elegance of the late twentieth century.
