An exceptional example of Paco Rabanne’s radical vision, this sculptural mini dress dates to 1967, a defining period in which the designer dismantled the conventions of traditional dressmaking and reconstructed clothing through industrial materials.

Entirely assembled by hand from hundreds of articulated silver-tone aluminium and gilt-metal elements, the dress functions less as a conventional garment than as a form of wearable architecture.

The metallic components are joined individually by rings, creating a flexible, chainmail-like surface that responds continuously to the body.

Dense horizontal rows shape the structured bust, while increasingly open arrangements through the torso reveal the skin beneath.

The skirt culminates in an irregular fringe of mobile metal elements, producing movement, reflection and sound with every step.

Its gladiatorial silhouette encapsulates the futuristic vocabulary that made Rabanne one of the most revolutionary designers of the Space Age: armour transformed into eveningwear, machinery reimagined as ornament and the female body presented as both powerful and theatrical.

A virtually identical Paco Rabanne dress was worn by German musician Udo Lindenberg on the cover of his 1981 album Udopia.

Christie’s has documented another example of this model as a rare aluminium and gilt-metal gladiator mini dress from 1967, explicitly noting its correspondence with the garment featured on the album cover. 

More than a dress, this is an artefact of twentieth-century avant-garde fashion, a piece situated at the intersection of couture, sculpture, performance and pop-cultural history.
